12 Wyler, William
1902-1971Nacido en la ciudad de Mulhouse, entonces alemana, hoy francesa, de padres judios de origen suizo, William Wyler sufrio los efectos de la Primera Guerra Mundial en su ciudad, que paso definitivamente a manos francesas como consecuencia del Tratado de Versalles. Estudio en Lausanne, en el Instituto de Segunda Ensenanza y en la Escuela Superior de Comercio. Tras ser expulsado de esta institucion, trabajo en Paris algun tiempo antes de volver a la casa familiar. Recomendado a su tio Carl Laemmle, magnate de la Universal, marcha a los Estados Unidos, donde desde chico de los recados llego, a los 23 anos, a dirigir su primera pelicula, Crook Buster, cortometraje de dos bobinas. Su primer largometraje data de 1926, y su primera pelicula sonora, de 1930, es precisamente un western, Hell’s Heroes. Su etapa mas fecunda, hasta su encuentro providencial con la actriz Bette Davis, fue en la productora de Samuel Goldwyn, para la que rodo algunos filmes que le hicieron destacar como director, en particular Calle sin salida (Dead End, 1937), cuyo evidente origen teatral ponia de manifiesto mas si cabe la maestria de Wyler en la direccion de actores y en la creacion de ambientes. Desde Jezabel (Jezebel, 1938) en adelante, Wyler se iria consolidando como uno de los grandes directores del cine americano. Algunas de sus peliculas, como Cumbres borras cosas (Wuthering Heights, 1937), La senora Miniver (Mrs. Mini ver, 1941) o Vacaciones en Roma (Roman Holiday, 1953), son clasicos de todos los tiempos. Olvidado a raiz de su mastodontico Ben-Hur (1959), ha sido reivindicado en los ultimos anos como un modelo a seguir en lo relativo a la gramatica del relato cinematografico. En el terreno que nos ocupa, Wil liam Wyler ha dirigido un gran western, El fo rastero, con una pareja protagonista dificil de mejorar. 13 Hawks, Howard
1896-1977La aparente ligereza de las peliculas de Howard Hawks es enganosa. Detras de unos filmes que, a primera vista, solo pretenden entretener al espectador, hay mucho mas; mas de lo que pueden ofrecer no pocos directores intelectualmente comprometidos. Por eso, hay que afirmar rotundamente que Howard Hawks es uno de los realizadores mas grandes del cine americano y del cine en general, a la altura de los diez o doce mas ilustres de todos los tiempos. La cosa empezo en el verano de 1916, cuando un joven estudiante de ingenieria, buen de portista, aficionado a los automoviles, decidio aprovechar las vacaciones de verano trabajando en Fa mous Players-Lasky, la futura Paramount, como ascensorista. Un ano despues, ya graduado, vuelve, ahora para colaborar en la produccion como decorador, montador, director de casting, ayudante de direccion y todo lo que fuera necesario hasta que, despues de algun nuevo parentesis, se consolida como guionista, lo que facilita su paso a la direccion, que tuvo lugar en 1926 con la produccion Fox The Road to Glory. De las ocho peliculas mudas que realizo, la mas “hawksiana” es, sin duda, Una novia en cada puerto (A Girl in Every Port, 1928), pero el director es, sin discusion, un hombre del sonoro, acaso por la esplendida utilizacion de los dialogos que lo caracterizo, y que se pone de manifiesto de forma extrema en La fiera de mi nina (Bringing Up Baby, 1938), una de las cumbres de la comedia. Todo aquello que toco Hawks, lo dignifico: la comedia, como se ha puesto de manifiesto, pero tambien el cine negro, con El sueno eterno (The Big Sleep, 1946), el filme de aventuras, con Hatari! (1962) y, desde luego, el western, genero en el que cada una de sus incursiones originaba una obra maestra. Rio Bravo es, sin ningun genero de dudas, una de las dos o tres mejores peliculas de un genero tan inagotable como la vida. Al parecer, el origen de la pelicula hay que encontrarlo en la irritacion que le producia a Hawks Solo ante el peligro (High Noon, Fred Zinnemann, 1952), cuyo metraje discurre en la tarea de encontrar ayuda para que el sheriff del lugar pueda enfrentarse a unos pistoleros que se encuentran camino de la ciudad. La idea motriz de Hawks, permanente a lo largo de toda su filmografia, de mostrar a personas (preferentemente hombres porque las mujeres son, sobre todo, causa de conflictos) que estan realizando su trabajo y lo realizan lo mejor que saben, es la historia de todos y cada uno de sus westerns, particularmente de su falsa coleccion de “rios”, formada por dos peliculas en lugar de cuatro, porque Rio Rojo es, en realidad, Red River, y en Rio de sangre ni siquiera aparece la palabra en el titulo original. Solo Rio Bravo y Rio Lobo, peliculas fronterizas donde las haya, responden a la idea que acuno el termino unificador para las cuatro peliculas. Estas dos ultimas, y la estupenda El Dorado, remake mas o menos encubierto de Rio Bravo, si que permanecen unidas por estrechos lazos cronologicos, estilisticos y tematicos.Viva Villa! (.Viva Villa!) En el conoce a Elia Kazan, del que se convierte en ayudante para su primera pelicula, Lazos humanos (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, 1945).Empieza a dirigir en 1948. Nicholas Ray es, sin duda, uno de los directores norteamericanos mas importantes del siglo XX. De acusada personalidad, sus peliculas desprenden un intenso lirismo, con independencia del genero en el que se inscriban. Pro bablemente la mas famosa de ellas sea Rebelde sin causa (Rebel without a Cause, 1955), prevista inicialmente para Sidney Lumet con Marlon Brando como protagonista, lugar este ultimo que ocupo en definitiva James Dean. Los problemas de Ray con los productores se fueron acentuando a medida que avanzaba su carrera, lo que, unido a sus problemas personales, termino convirtiendolo en alcoholico y jugador compulsivo. La pelicula Relampago sobre el agua (Lightning Over Water, 1980), realizada con la ayuda de Wim Wenders, muestra con todo su patetismo la agonia del realizador, muerto en 1979, antes del estreno del filme. Los cuatro westerns dirigidos por Ray (el primero de ellos un ejemplo, sin duda, atipico del genero) se pueden calificar como westerns romanticos, en los que sentimientos como el amor fou, o la amistad, modelan el contenido del discurso. La filmografia de Elia Kazan en su totalidad es altamente estimulante. Especial mente conmovedora, su America, America (1963) es, con toda probabilidad, una de las grandes peliculas de todos los tiempos.
